2021 nPOD Annual Meeting

The Network for Pancreatic Organ donors with Diabetes (nPOD) will host its 13th Annual Meeting as a virtual scientific conference from February 22-24, 2021. Over the past thirteen years, nPOD has supported much-improved understanding about the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes through the study of both inter and live tissue/ cells obtained through organ donation. Throughout the years, nPOD has promoted a collaborative environment and an interactive venue in its annual meeting. Given the current pandemic affecting the world, this year’s meeting will be virtual. In consideration of this, the meeting will be shorter than usual and more directly focused on the presentation and discussion of nPOD research. Yet we hope that the meeting format will continue to afford a great opportunity for scientific interaction.

Annual Meeting Format

  • The meeting will use the zoom platform, and it will be “live” in its entirety. There are no recorded portions (some portions of the meeting will be recorded and made available for “on-demand” viewing).
  • The meeting will be shorter than usual and held over a 3-day period. Each day, the effective meeting time is about 4 hours. The meeting will typically have 2 main sessions daily, 90 minutes each, with a 30-minute break between the sessions. All sessions include a 30-minute discussion involving chairs, speakers, invited discussants, and you! Some exceptions to this format are described in the agenda.
  • The main eight sessions are centered around the following themes:
    • Pancreas Pathology
    • Oral Abstract Presentations (6 abstracts, 15 minutes each including 5 minutes for Q&A)
    • The Beta-cell in T1D
    • COVID, pancreas, and diabetes (this session will be 120 minutes long)
    • nPOD and Industry
    • Immunology of Type 1 diabetes
    • Late-Breaking Oral Abstract Presentations (4 abstracts, 15 minutes each including 5 minutes for Q&A
    • Poster presentations
  • For our Junior Investigators, a special session by Dr. Maggie Morris Fears (NIH Chief Scientific Review Officer) will be held on the morning of the last day (2/24/21). Be sure to catch her discussion on “NIH Peer Review: Guidance, questions, and answers”. 

We are delighted by the enthusiasm and willingness of many to present at the nPOD meeting. We received 52 abstracts, including 18 submitted as late-breaking. Given the reduced time available, 16 abstracts were selected for oral presentation during the main sessions.

To further facilitate presentation and discussion of all abstracts submitted, and to afford the opportunity that (especially junior) presenters receive feedback and interact with colleagues, all remaining abstracts will be presented as posters; at the end of days 1 and 2 of the meeting, following a 1-hour break, we will host the poster sessions, from 3-4 PM EST. Each presenter will have an individual poster room, where they can discuss their work with colleagues. Meeting participants will be able to visit the virtual poster rooms, their posters of interest being listed in the agenda and website, and just one zoom click away. Thus, all poster presenters will be able to discuss their work, for two hours over two days. Have fun!

Please refer to the agenda for details and times of the day. All times reported are U.S. Eastern standard time. The meeting will roughly run between about 10 AM and 4 PM, with breaks. We apologize to those that are not served well by these hours due to time zone differences.
