Our screening laboratory partners are nPOD's "detectives," identifying donors that are in early stages of pre-type 1 diabetes (have type 1 diabetes autoantibodies) but have no clinical diagnosis of the disease. Our laboratory partners screen for multiple OPOs and are recognized as national leaders in serology testing.
Our laboratory partners test over 1,500 donors annually for the nPOD project. Gifts from autoantibody positive donors have the potential to help our scientists answer fundamental questions related to the etiology and progression of type 1 diabetes.
Our screening lab partners include:
The Mendez National Institute of Transplantation in Los Angeles, Calif., is the first stand-alone screening lab partner of nPOD. As a partner, it has the willingness to tests for autobodies and helps explain to other organizations why nPOD matters. The Institute is currently a place where about 10 Organ Procurement Organizations send their autobodies for screening.
LABS Inc. is located in Denver, CO., and Philadelphia, PA., both laboratories are nPOD partners. As a screening lab partner, its lab location is able to accommodate screening for the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States. Therefore, it has allowed nPOD to add more Organ Procurement Organizations from those areas to its project.
If you are currently an nPOD screening lab partner, or would like to learn more about what it means to be an nPOD screening lab partner, below are several resources:
Screening lab protocols. These protocols are the same of all of our screening lab partners and are made public to ensure the standardization of our methods.
Request autoantibody kits. We provide our screening lab partners with the necessary kits for autoantibody testing. These partners visit this page to request kits, which we approve and send to the lab at no cost.
Autoantibody database. This is the database of all screenings that have been done for the nPOD project. Please visit this page to learn more about the database and/or request a username and password for the database.
